Free Rides! Calgary and Edmonton to test 12-seat electric, autonomous vehicle shuttle bus system

Two Alberta cities will offer free test-rides in autonomous, electric shuttles this fall!

City planners in Alberta announced on June 6, 2018 that two AV projects will allow the public to ‘test-ride’ in Autonomous Vehicles (AV’s) in the fall of 2018.  

As more cities look to innovate their transportation grids, reduce costs and work towards more environmentally and sustainable solutions, this project gives Calgarians and Edmontonians an exciting opportunity to get a ‘free, unmanned ride’ in autonomous, electric vehicles.

Free shuttles will run in Calgary between the Telus Spark Science Centre and the Calgary Zoo along a service lane, said a city transportation planner, Andrew Sedor.

The route in Edmonton will be announced later this summer (awaiting approval by Alberta Transportation) but is proposed to be operating in October, said Stephanie McCabe with the City of Edmonton.

The automated, electric vehicles will hold 12 passengers and travel at low speeds — roughly 12 km/h — on separate roadways where there are no other vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians.
